The Smile

This giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) lingers lovingly on trumpetweed. Nearby are honeybees and at least three other species of bees. The aromatic leaves - growing along the banks of the loch through summer - now attract the pollinators for a relatively rare late-summer treat.  Surely that pattern on the butterfly is nature’s emoticon of appreciation.
